Brandt Road Rail Corporation is known for designing, manufacturing, and commissioning unique rail equipment that enables our customers to do their jobs more efficiently. The Self Powered Hybrid Maintenance Vehicles we designed built and commissioned for BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) in California is one such vehicle with many unique characteristics enabling our customers to be more efficient. The vehicle is used to maintain and inspect transit track, tunnel environments, and bridges to ensure safe travel for passengers.
The unit is very efficient, being powered by a 600HP diesel with a hydraulic electronic controlled hydrostatic drive system. The vehicle can also be completely electrically powered with batteries lasting a minimum of 4 hours, this greatly reduces the amount of emissions produced and fuel consumed.
The Self Powered Hybrid Maintenance Vehicle is capable of safely moving railcars along the track due to its couplers and train air brakes. Brandt designed this maintenance vehicle with flexibility in design in mind. The vehicle has been designed to be adaptable to very tight clearance envelopes and various track gauge depending on the transits requirements. The maintenance vehicle will help you properly and safely maintain your railway system.
Features
600 HP Hydrostatic Drive System
The Self Powered Hybrid Maintenance Vehicle was built with a 600 horsepower hydrostatic drive system enabling travel with or without railcars in both directions. The power from the hydrostatic drive allows it to move railcars safely along the track. With its ample horsepower it is guaranteed to get you to the jobsite in a timely manner, maximizing the amount of time spent working on site.
Design
The Maintenance Vehicle brings with it a 40 foot open deck area that can be used for hauling equipment. This ample amount of space will allow the work crew to bring any equipment they need to the jobsite without worrying about running out of space.
The cab of the vehicle has room for 6 passengers plus the driver, providing ample seating for crew workers to get to the job site. The cab has been designed with comfortability in mind including a robust climate control system. Excellent sight lines are provided for the driver of the vehicle minimizing the risk of an incident occurring. Under each seat inside the cab there is storage space provided for deck work lights or any other extra equipment needed to be brought along.
Hybrid Capabilities
The unit has hybrid capabilities utilizing only battery power for a minimum of 4 hours of use with reduced loading. When it comes to charging the batteries, there are two options. The first option is to charge the batteries by using a small generator with very low emissions, or the second option is using the main engine when full speed and horse power are required. The hybrid option enables a clean, healthy, quite working environment in tunnel applications, further reducing fuel and emissions and worker fatigue. All features (except higher speed travel) will be in operation while the vehicle is being powered by only the batteries. With controls over the work system, drive system, brake system, crane, and even the work platform, the hybrid option does not leave you under-powered.
Easy service of the off the shelf locomotive batteries is allowed by including easy to remove panels that provide access to the battery compartment. This easy access point will minimize the amount of time spent on maintenance work on the batteries.
Easy to switch out attachments
The Self Powered Hybrid Maintenance Vehicle can be customized to suit your needs, available attachments can be swapped and interchanged between the vehicles depending on what job needs to be done. All of the following attachments are quick change attachments and allow easy-change out (< 30 Min.) providing you the tools you need to get the job done, whatever that job might be.
Overhead Catenary Platform
The vehicle has a detachable work platform that moves 3 feet side to side in either direction as well as up and down. This feature is perfect for any operation that requires maintenance up high. The platform is capable of reaching 20 feet above the top of the rail providing plenty of reach for any operation. This platform has ample room to move around on, as well as a safety rail around the perimeter ensuring the safety of anybody on the platform while it is raised. To further promote the safety of those on the platform, it will automatically level itself out while the maintenance vehicle is on a super-elevated curve as high as 6 inches.
Under-bridge Inspection Platform
This attachment is ideal for the safe inspection of bridges. The system is mounted on the deck of the unit and allows an individual to inspect the structure of the bridge from underneath. The long reach of the system allows the inspector to not only inspect the sides of the overpass but also go underneath and inspect there as well. The system includes a man bucket equipped with all standard safety features that are expected for such equipment. The inspection system is hydraulically powered and uses rail axle suspension lockouts instead of outriggers ensuring stability of the system.
Cable Reels
The large deck provides enough space for three cable reels to be mounted. Each reel is capable of holding 6000lbs, up to 72 inches in diameter and 55 inches in width. The reels have been designed to allow bi-direction reeling and unreeling providing convenient maneuverability of the equipment. Each reel includes reel locks making sure that the reels will only move when intended to do so.
Other Options
Knuckle Boom Crane
The Knuckle Boom Crane is a stationary mounted crane that provides all features that you would want and expect in a crane. The crane is mounted in such a way that allows for all other optional equipment to be mounted on the deck without getting in the way. Various reach and lift capacity cranes can be specified to meet custom requirements.
Diesel Powered Generator
This option allows the crew to utilize various electric tools that may be needed at the job site if the batteries have already been depleted and without the large main engine running. The generator can be mounted in customized locations that suit your needs.
Interchangeable Deck Railing
Depending on the task at hand there may be different deck railing suitable to the job. For that reason Brandt engineered the deck railing to be easy to change out so that you can have the best railing to suit your needs in any application.
