PERFORMANCE & VERSATILITY ON THE RAIL AND ON THE ROAD

The Brandt R5 Power Unit is the most powerful rail car mover with industry leading versatility to carry out various tasks, including Maintenance of Way, Revenue Service, and Emergency Response. This highly capable machine can pull heavier loads up steeper grades and quickly switch to the road.

Higher Productivity and Versatility

The Brandt R5 Power Unit versatility on and off the road is purpose-built to keep you productive and efficient.

  • The 605 hp engine, 2050 ft lb unit generates 50,000 lb of tractive effort.
  • Power and torque are delivered by an off-road transmission and tridem drive axles, capable of highway speeds of up to 65 mph and on rail speeds of 30 mph and 25 mph in reverse.
  • Tractive effort is controlled at the push of a button to suit changing track conditions by adjusting the shelf coupler.
  • Combining tractive effort with the dedicated Tie Crane or OTM working deck maximizes your material management needs.
  • The R5 meets DOT dimension regulations (under 8′6″ wide and 40' long). The retractable front coupler reduces the length of the R5.
  • Custom Solutions—When a unique feature is required, Brandt’s engineering and design team are here to work with you to custom design a solution to fit your needs.

Increased Uptime

The Brandt R5 Power Unit is designed with uptime in mind. Reliability and serviceability have been engineered into every aspect of the machine to allow operation in all conditions.

  • Switching between road and rail is accomplished in under 3 minutes. A camera monitor and simple instruction procedure next to the control assist the operator for rapid conversion from road to rail or back.
  • Improved operator feedback delivering data on fluid levels, temperatures, and current tractive effort needs.
  • Simplicity of electric, hydraulic, and pneumatic routings reduce corrosion points, trouble shooting and repair times.
  • Convenient maintenance point of access reduces the time needed during regular service intervals.

Focus on Safety

Safety is a top priority for the Brandt R5 Power Unit. It incorporates multiple safety features to ensure a secure working environment for the operator.

  • Improved visibility day and night with reduced blind spots, backlit controls, and infrared cameras.
  • Hydraulic systems have integral counterbalance valves in cylinders and the crane swing motor has a static brake and hydraulic lock protecting from unwanted motion in case hose ruptures.
  • Configurable system information is safely presented to the operator via the main dash display alongside other critical truck information. All system information is readily available at a glance.

Features

The Brandt Power Unit Crane Model is a versatile tool suitable for various applications, including MOW. With a heavy lifting capacity of 11,000 lb at 10 feet, it efficiently handles material handling tasks, while extra storage capacity is available on the deck surface and in the cabinets for track tools. The Tie Crane features a 28-foot-long reach and can lift 3700 lb at 25 feet with a cordless continuous swing bypass type grapple, making it highly productive. The A-frame style outriggers and pedestal frame attached to the R5 Power Unit frame rails provide stability, even with heavy loads. A 30 inch, magnet system is also available to handle other materials.

Off-road Transmission

The off-road transmission transfer engine power smoothly, because of industry-specific optimized shift points, ensuring the load can be pulled safely with precise control. The new dry torque convertor is self-contained, eliminating potential leak points in the bell housing. New oil-level sensors in the transmission sump warn of oil loss before damage can occur.

Managing tractive efforts

The adjustable Shelf-Coupler transfers weight from the trailing railcar, boosting tractive effort by lifting weight from the railcar and the rear rail wheels transferring more weight to the drive tires.

Less is more

The pneumatic valve placement has been optimized and the use of automotive grade harnesses has reduced the complexity of the hose routing and electrical harnesses

Keep your cool

The transmission, the hydraulic and the air compressor cooler are assembled on a structure with hinges, designed to be tilted out of the way for easier cleaning and provides great access to service the transmission and the hydraulic pumps.
