Precision Scanning Aids Police Investigations

The Challenge

An urban Canadian police service required improved precision when collecting data from crime scenes and were looking for one efficient tool that would do it all. They had been using a conventional robot and an older GNNS receiver with outdated software that was costing them valuable time. This outdated technology was not meeting their requirements and significantly slowing down their investigations.

The force needed an efficient solution with integrated GNSS technology so they could finish accident reconstruction surveys more quickly and pass it on to the next officer who needed it. In their search for a solution, they looked to Brandt to see how our technology would benefit their workflow.

The Solution

After assessing the situation, the Brandt Positioning Technology team proposed an ideal solution. The all-new GTL-1003 Robotic/Scanning Hybrid station from Topcon is state-of-the-art technology that would typically be used by contractors in the survey and construction industries. However, when Brandt learned about the data being collected at crime and crash scenes, they knew this tool would increase the police service’s operational efficiency.

The GTL-1003 delivers images and full-dome scanning within seconds with instant point-cloud recognition, enabling SPS to lay out or survey more points in less time. The technology collects all of the data SPS needs in one application, so they can switch from one configuration to another in seconds – an industry-first.

Topcon’s GTL-1003 utilizes ultrasonic motors that are the thinnest, lightest, and most powerful on the market to provide the smoothest and most accurate prism tracking possible. And, the integrated GNSS technology allows them to accurately measure points even without line of site, reducing unnecessary setups and saving them time. Plus, these innovative features are paired with a BrandtNet subscription that eliminates the need to set up a costly base station.

The Result

Brandt delivered a new GTL-1003 with GNNS Hiper HR and conducted training sessions to ensure that officers would get the most from the new technology. The police service is now equipped with a 3-in-1 precision solution that collects accurate survey data, utilises the hybrid technology with GPS on the BrandtNet network, and scans on a single setup with one field software and data collector. If officers need to visit different crime scenes at the same time, they are now able to split the Hybrid scanning solution unit, delivering maximum productivity.
When deployed, the new technology immediately exceeded expectations, simplifying and enhancing data collection and aiding officers in their investigations.
